صورة من كتاب برتغالي تظهر مسقط عام 1620م.
منذ عام 1500م كانت الموانئ على ساحل عمان محتله من قبل البرتغاليين وفي عام 1622م خسر البرتغاليون جزيرة هرمز التي تتمتع بموقع استراتيجي بالقرب من ساحل إيران فحتلت قوة أنجلو-فارسية- تلك الجزيرة التي كانت مركزًا تجاريًا استراتيجيًا ولكن بقيت الموانئ العمانية في أيدي البرتغاليين حتى استطاع العمانيون من استرجاعها في عام 1650م وعلى الفور تم إرسال سفينة هولندية إلى مسقط لاستكشاف موقوماتها ولكن كانت قد تحولت المدينة لحالة سيئة للغاية.
